PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
To safeguard and grow the commercial value of Filtrona intellectual property by (i) ensuring inventions arising in the Surabaya Innovation team and at other Filtrona sites are captured, decided upon, and documented; (ii) acting as the internal decision-maker on patent filing, renewal, abandonment, and external firm selection on the recommendation of Squarewood IP; (iii) owning the internal IP register and patent-to-product mapping; (iv) governing IP spend; (v) producing internal portfolio analysis and quarterly reporting to Surabaya R&D leadership and to Singapore HQ; and (vi) maintaining a strong, fit-for-purpose interface between Filtrona R&D, commercial, and legal functions and the external IP ecosystem.
As the Innovations & IP Business Partner, you will:
Manage the end-to-end invention disclosure process, from idea capture through evaluation and decision-making.
Partner with global R&D and Engineering teams to identify, assess, and protect new innovations.
Act as the primary liaison with external Intellectual Property (IP) partners to support patent filing, prosecution, renewals, and portfolio management.
Maintain Company intellectual property portfolio, including patent registers, product mapping, trade secret records, and related documentation.
Coordinate IP budget planning, approvals, invoice management, and expenditure reporting.
Analyze IP portfolio performance and prepare management reports to support strategic business decisions.
Provide IP support for new product development, technology projects, licensing, supplier agreements, and customer collaborations.
Promote IP awareness by delivering training and guidance to engineering and innovation teams.
Collaborate with stakeholders across Asia, Europe, and the Americas to strengthen Filtrona's innovation capability.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
4–8 years of experience in Product Development, R&D, Engineering, Technology Management, Innovation Management, or Intellectual Property.
Experience supporting New Product Development (NPD), Technology Development, Innovation, or Product Commercialization projects.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret technical information and patent specifications.
Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for data analysis, manage dashboard, cost tracking, register, and reporting.
Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience will be considered an advantage:
Experience in a relevant technical field such as filtration, polymers, materials, tobacco technology, paper, packaging, or other high-volume manufacturing industries.
Exposure to intellectual property (IP) activities through product development, R&D, innovation projects, patent submissions, invention disclosures, or technology commercialization. Formal IP qualifications are not required.
Experience working within New Product Development (NPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), Stage-Gate, or other innovation management frameworks.
Knowledge of trade secret management, confidentiality practices, or information security related to innovation and product development.
Experience managing project budgets, external suppliers, consultants, or service providers.
Experience working in a multinational organization with cross-functional and cross-time-zone teams.
